Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol
An open protocol that lets AI agents built on different platforms discover each other’s capabilities, exchange messages and coordinate tasks. It complements the Model Context Protocol, which connects an agent to tools and data rather than to other agents.
Why it matters
As organisations adopt agents from several vendors and internal teams, those agents increasingly need to hand work to one another. A shared protocol reduces bespoke integration and makes cross-agent workflows easier to build and replace.
Interoperability also widens the attack surface. Each agent-to-agent interaction needs authentication, authorisation, clear limits on delegated authority and logging, just like any other system integration.
In practice
For example, a UK retailer’s internal procurement agent might use A2A to ask a supplier’s order-status agent for delivery dates, with the retailer’s agent limited to read-only requests and every exchange logged for review.
