AI copilot
An AI assistant embedded in a tool or workflow that suggests, drafts or prepares work for a person who remains in control of the outcome. The person reviews and decides; the copilot reduces effort on the steps around that decision.
Why it matters
Copilots are often the lowest-risk way to introduce generative AI, because a person stays accountable for each output. They can shorten repetitive work such as drafting, summarising and searching, and they build familiarity before any move towards automation.
Their value depends on context and integration. A copilot that can see the right records, cite its sources and write directly into the system of work is used; one that requires copying and pasting between windows usually is not.
In practice
For example, a UK insurance broker might add a copilot to its placement system that drafts market submissions from the client file and highlights missing information, while the broker edits and approves every submission before it is sent.
