Intelligent document processing (IDP)
The use of AI to classify documents, extract information from them and validate the results, turning forms, letters, invoices and reports into structured data. Modern IDP combines optical character recognition, machine learning and language models.
Why it matters
Many operational processes still start with a document someone has to read and rekey. IDP can reduce that manual effort and speed up processing, but only when extraction accuracy is measured and exceptions are handled well.
The critical design choices are what happens to low-confidence fields, how corrections feed back into improvement, and how extracted data is validated against other systems before it drives an action.
In practice
For example, a UK freight and customs broker might use IDP to extract shipper, consignee, commodity and value fields from commercial invoices in several formats, validate them against the booking, and route mismatches to an operator queue.
